  6. Absolutely not! Maybe some of you comic
  7. enjoying Marvelites out there have  no-
  8. ticed the leaving of  all  those  great 
  9. artists  like  TODD  MCFARLANE  and ROB 
  10. LIEFELD for  the  new  company  on  the 
  11. block called  IMAGE PRESS. Those six or 
  12. seven mega stars  just  wanted  to have 
  13. the copyrights of their characters  and
  14. that wasn't possible down there at Mar-
  15. vel. So they decided to found something
  16. new, something of their own. With  some 
  17. help of the independent company  MALIBU
  18. they started the creator-owned  company 
  19. IMAGE PRESS.  After  having  released a 
  20. couple of  issues the fans seem to have 
  21. given the big  thumbs  up  to this pro-
  22. ject, but this  doesn't  mean  the down
  23. fall of the big one called MARVEL. They 
  24. are still the king of the hill and that 
  25. is where they'll  be  for the forseable 
  26. future, on  top  of  the  world. Marvel 
  27. owns about  50%  of  the comicbook mar-
  28. ket's dollar share. The  house of ideas 
  29. can trust a real solid foundation being 
  30. built up  during  the  last  40  or  so 
  31. years. Another  example for the growing 
  32. popularity of Marvel  are  the  back is
  33. sues, which values  are  still  increa-
  34. sing. In several  interviews  the Image 
  35. crew says, that the divorcement between 
  36. them and Marvel had  been  very  smooth 
  37. and probably some of  them  will return 
  38. to them in the future. Marvel  has also 
  39. got a new crop of hot artists like MARK 
  40. BAGLEY, RON LIM, SAM KIETH  and  up and 
  41. comers known as JOE  QUESADA,  JAE  LEE 
  42. (no  relation   to  Stan 'The Man') and 
  43. LIAM  SHARP. You  can't  take a few ar- 
  44. tists and some Terminator-alike charac-
  45. ters to bring that Marvel down. You can 
  46. take the top of the  best  artists away 
  47. and Marvel will pop  up  with even more 
  48. kick-ass  artists. Although  Image  has 
  49. really  shot  like a rocket through the 
  50. comic world,  you  can't take for sure, 
  51. that they've got  the  right  stuff  to 
  52. have a  lasting  effect  on  the  comic 
  53. world, which  is no problem for Marvel.
  54. Every month they come up with ner stun-
  55. ning titles. Some of them suck but most 
  56. of them will stay  in  our  hearts  for 
  57. years. The creators of Image don't want
  58. to cause trouble between them and  Mar-
  59. vel. They even want to  cooperate  with 
  60. them or with other companies  like DARK 
  61. HORSE (McFarlane phoned them a  lot  in 
  62. the last time. Are we going  to  expect 
  63. that SPAWN-ALIENS crossover in the next 
  64. time,  who  knows - who  cares?). There  
  65. are big changes on the market in Ameri-
  66. ca. But no one is able  to  kick Marvel 
  67. from its throne. The second position is 
  68. owned by DC (you know them,  they  have 
  69. Bat-Man  and  Superman), but  it  seems 
  70. that their  kingdom's gone. Even though 
  71. they try to  make their characters real 
  72. and to pay attention  to  continuety in 
  73. their strange and unorganized universe, 
  74. but anyway, they seem  to  neglect what 
  75. the fans are pleading  for. How's about 
  76. a fourth Bat-Man or a Robin series? Why 
  77. not a monthly  LOBO book? Just a succes
  78. sion of mini series  is not productive. 
  79. With   Image   steamrolling   its   way 
  80. straight up and companies like VAILLANT 
  81. and  DARK  HORSE  lurking  to climb  on 
  82. higher in the charts, it won't take too 
  83. long to kick DC's fucking ass from that 
  84. second  position. In   contrast  to DC, 
  85. Marvel knows what's right. They  can be 
  86. called the KINGS  OF  SPECIAL  PROJECTS 
  87. like glow-in-the-dark- and hologram co-
  88. vers, trading   cards,  center spreads, 
  89. posters, lithos, portfolios, di-cut co-
  90. vers and X-overs. But the most  impres-
  91. sive reasons for the success of  Marvel 
  92. are  the  true  phenOmenal  characters. 
  93. They've  got  all  these classic heroes 
  94. (who are still high  in the charts like 
  95. Amazing Spider Man. His  title  reached 
  96. position 1 of the top selling titles in 
  97. June '92) like  Fantastic  Four,  Aven-
  98. gers, Hulk, X-Men  and  other  ones who 
  99. made Marvel that good. But  they  don't 
  100. rest... new creations like X-Force, New 
  101. Warriors, Darkhawk, Deathlok and  Nomad 
  102. are reaching the top positions  in  the 
  103. selling charts.

  108. items and background informations about
